Destruction of Historic Sites Prompts Appeal by Bosnians
THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION 13 January 1995, p. A37:
Historians in Bosnia-Herzegovina have issued an appeal to their colleagues in the United States to protest the destruction of historic, cultural, and religious monuments and facilities in Bosnia.
An American academic, William Hunt, a history professor at St. Lawrence University, was given the text of the appeal during a recent visit to Sarajevo. The plea was issued by two groups associated with the University of Sarajevo -- the Association of Historians of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Institute for History of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The appeal, "Against the Murder of Memory," states:
"As historians of Bosnia-Herzegovina, we appeal to our American colleagues to join us in condemning the murder of memory which has
been perpetrated in our country through the willful destruction of
libraries, archives, houses of worship, and other historical monuments.
This nihilistic violence -- a systematic attempt to obliterate all traces of Bosnia's rich tradition of diversity and tolerance -- has immeasurably damaged the cultural heritage of all the people of Bosnia.
"We invite our American colleagues to work with us, according to their individual and institutional means, to preserve what has survived
and to restore, as far as possible, what has been destroyed."
TAX-EXEMPT CONTRIBUTIONS
Mr. Hunt directs the Solidarity Project, a program that makes modest donations, chiefly in the form of journal subscriptions and books, to educational institutions in East Europe. Tax-exempt contributions to support the study of history in Bosnia may be made through the project. Checks written to St. Lawrence University and marked "Solidarity Project/Bosnia" should be sent to Mr. Hunt at St. Lawrence Unviersity, Canton, N.Y. 13617.
