[Famous People in Japan] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Akashi Yasushi Date of Birth 19 January 1931 Place of Birth Akita Akashi Yasushi is on the staff of the United Nations. In 1954, he graduated from Tokyo University, and in 1957, after he went to Virginia University for study, he joined the United Nations. In 1962, he became the first Japanese to be chairman of the executive committee of UN Headquarters Staff Union, and after he took some posts, he became the founder of United Nations University, as head official of the organizing committee in 1972. In 1992, he went to Kampuchea, as chief of UNTAC, and then he was appointed as chief of UNPOFOR in Yugoslavia in 1993. As chief of UNPOFOR, he tried to solve the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina not by military but by political negotiation. The pressure to find a military solution kept growing, but he never changed his attitude as neutral mediator until he left his position in 1995. He is working in the United Nations still now.
